About Me

Me

I was born in Leeds and have always been very proud of my Yorkshire roots.
My parents were born there and their parents before them - perhaps this is why I can cook such humungous Yorkshire Puddings??

On the right is a portrait of me, done by my father when I was about seven.

Family & Keys

Both my parents were artists. They encouraged me and my brother and sister to draw and paint and read; in other words to never be bored and always have things to do. I can also sew, cook, garden, decorate and mend furniture.  I probably can't do any of it very well, but the fact is, I can try.
They always encouraged me to write, that's why I putkeysup there  - they unlocked so many possibilities. Thanks Ma and Pa!
My father had one eye (war wound), and was the principal of the Jacob Kramer College of Art. His students called him Popeye!

School

I went to a Grammar School in Leeds. I then spent a year as an au pair  in Switzerland. There was no television there so we entertained ourselves. I made books and read hundreds of books.

University

I studied Botany at Newcastle University. I have always loved plants (and animals). I'm a devoted vegetarian, bordering on vegan.
At Oxford University I received a Post Grad Certificate of Education.
I also, much later, did an MA in Creative Writing.

Work

Jobs. I've been a waitress,  shop assistant, theatre assistant, nanny and teacher.
